 Is PowerPoint a Drawing Program?
I continue being amazed with PowerPoint's drawing capabilities. Right under the hood of the slide program is its secret twin, the drawing program!
How does this drawing program compare to heavyweight drawing programs like Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW? Before I answer that question, let me give you some small analogies of how people would approach drawing tasks before the advent of the digital age:
- When a commercial artist needed to create a new packaging for a client, he or she used their tools, such as tracing paper, markers, etc.
- When an architect needed to draw a plan, he or she used all their measurement and drawing tools.
- When you wanted to scribble something, you used a piece of paper (you still do that!).
Now let us look at the same scenarios in more contemporary times:
- When the commercial artist moved to doing drawings on a computer, he or she started using Illustrator or CorelDRAW.
- When the architect started using digital plans, he or she started using one of the AutoCAD tools.
- But what do you do when you want to move up to scribbling doodles in the digital age? Simple, you move up to a program you already know to use: PowerPoint!

The adage, a picture is worth a thousand words has been heard more than a thousand times, and yet the truth in that statement still holds good, except in one scenario, and that is all about where the visuals actually came from? Many people are quite happy searching for keywords on Google’s image search (and similar search options on Bing and Yahoo!) -- they then copy / paste the visual content they find right into their slides! Of course, that's not the right thing to do.
